I kind of told you that

When I see the surface of Morrow pond.

The soft ripples are

woven, like a straw basket.

One that could hold fruit, string, or dead flowers.

As the sun sets,

These patterns start to become clear.

Each line thickens, I close my eyes.

I feel that the air, just like the pond

Is a woven basket.

As a child, I traveled through the holes,

Between each woven piece of straw.

I am learning again

To find these small spaces.

It seems easiest, to start here

At Morrow pond.

The sunset and the water are my mentors,

The first lesson is to close my eyes.

A young and old soul

Well it’s been a little while since I’ve updated. I don’t have internet where I’m currently living, so updating anything on the internet doesn’t seem to fit in to my schedule as well. I am still creating but i think I’d like to take this time to talk about my dreams a little.

This week I had more than one dream involving elderly men. In one I’m standing on the sidewalk with others around my age, watching four to five old men cross the road. One has a cane, one is blind, one is using a walker and the others are carefully and slowly walking along. There wasn’t any talking, just observing. Slowing down.

In the other dream I’m in a big house and talking to ghosts, all older men. They are very gently asking me to be “just a little more quiet”.

Then last night I had a dream I was with my friends, but I was on the ground, sitting on a blanket with toys around me. Much like a set up you’d have for a toddler. This makes sense because most of my time is spent with youngsters. I wasn’t really connecting to anyone in this dream, watching and listening, but for the most part I felt younger then everyone.

Dreams about age. Growth.

Time to slow down, and also a time to review how I think about myself. Do I feel younger?

When preparing the painting work this morning, I had a choice between four colors, just two to be used by the children. I chose the blue and red watercolors. Thinking to myself, I wonder if they’ll notice they can make purple?
Later as one of the four year old students started to paint, he shouted “I made purple! Look! Purple!” and chuckled to himself. He then created the most beautiful, free painting I’ve seen in a long time. As I watched him paint, I couldn’t help but to think about my own work.
So tonight I decided to try the same practice. To only use the colors blue and red and see where that led me, how it felt.
I don’t especially like this painting, but I think it’s good to place restrictions on yourself, with your art. A way of simplifying, so that there can be room for more subtle changes.

Charcoal, white pastel, paint.
Still in progress.
Also starting a diorama, hope to start making updates on this project soon. I’ve been thinking about nursery rhymes a lot lately. Thinking this work will have a lot to do with the childs perspective, how they begin to form schemas of their present environment. What is it that’s happening as their both taking information in, and then categorizing it, finding a place for it in their minds. To help make sense of this world.

My creative process (a small part)

Sometimes making art can feel like my arms, legs, heart, stomach and mind are being pulled and stretched. When I sit down to draw, I can feel a piece of myself being released. This act of pulling out what’s inside can be both invigorating and draining. Often I lay down while creating, to take a minute to feel. I often like to take the shape of the figure I’m drawing, to better understand how it really feels to hold my body in a certain way. Currently I’m working on a drawing that is about this experience. The body has the capability to express so much.
